The first 3DContentCentral® content partner demonstrates its 10-year commitment to the SolidWorks community.

As a member of the Trace Software Group, TraceParts (www.traceparts.com) will join the 2010 SolidWorks World Conference being held in Anaheim, California, from Jan. 31-Feb. 3. The productivity benefits of the TraceParts 3D library of supplier's catalogs and its seamless integration with elecworks™ will be demonstrated in the Partner Pavilion, booth #109. TraceParts has been a SolidWorks Solution Partner since 1998 and it was the first to supply its catalogs on 3DContentCentral® as a content partner.

Time is precious and designers have better things to do than model off-the-shelf components for their projects. With over 100 million native 3D CAD models for SolidWorks, the tracepartsonline.net portal completely eliminates the time consuming process of finding and modeling international standard and manufacturers' components. The time saved in this way allows the designer to spend more time on the critical stages of the design process.

TraceParts leveraged the SolidWorks openness to develop an extensive library of standard SolidWorks-native 3D parts. Designers from all industries, and especially those involved in Industrial Machinery, Tooling, Automotive and Aerospace design, benefit from all the most commonly used components from the largest names of the mechanical and electrical industries: Advantech, Asco Numatics, Bosch Rexroth, Cepex, CGI, Contrinex, Dirak, Euchner, Facom, Ganter, GGB, Halder, IFM, Igus, INA/FAG, Kabelschlepp, Legrand, Legris, Mädler, Misumi, Nozag, Schmalz, Schmersal, Schneider Electric, Sherex, SNR, Stauffenberg, TEA, Trelleborg, Vanel and more.

“We are delighted to exhibit once again at the SolidWorks World Conference”, says Gabriel Guigue, Managing Director of TraceParts. “For many years now we’ve been delivering millions of CAD files to designers from our portal tracepartsonline.net, and nothing will ever replace meeting some of them face to face!”.

TraceParts 3D Catalogs Receives Autodesk Inventor 2011 Certification

100+ million native 3D models are just mouse clicks away from Inventor User Community.

St Romain, France – March 25, 2010 – TraceParts today announced that its 3D library of suppliers and standard parts catalogs has successfully passed the challenging Autodesk Inventor 2011 certification. Through this technical and marketing achievement, TraceParts reinforces its long-lasting partnership with Autodesk, having been a member of the worldwide Autodesk Developer Network (ADN) for more than 15 years.

The TraceParts 3D component library is one of the largest parts libraries in the world, offering 100+ million 3D CAD models & 2D drawings, including both industry standard parts as well as products from hundreds of manufacturers’ catalogs used by the tooling, machinery, aerospace and automotive industries. Autodesk Inventor mechanical design software takes engineers beyond 3D to Digital Prototyping by enabling them to design, visualize, and simulate products before they are ever built.

TraceParts users can browse or search for products, configure product options, create dynamic 3D previews, and insert native Inventor 3D product models directly into their designs together with their Bill of Materials (BoM) attributes.

“Engineers are far more dependent on manufactured content than ever before, and this certification demonstrates our commitment to meeting the needs of our global customers,” said Jim Quanci, director of Autodesk Developer Network. “TraceParts provides easy and quick access to millions of native-format Autodesk Inventor models of the parts our customers use every day. So now, the Inventor Community can concentrate on designing and innovating new products instead of wasting time and effort modeling parts they don’t manufacture.”

We are extremely pleased to be the first 3D Parts Library to reach the Autodesk Inventor 2011 Certification," said Gabriel Guigue, Managing Director of TraceParts. "Time to market is crucial to Autodesk Inventor customers, and we know that over 80% of CAD models that a mechanical designer adds to his parts list are later purchased. This is why we strongly believe this Inventor 2011 certification will bring fantastic additional marketing exposure to our many 3D catalogs.”

RS Components Offers Free 3D Downloadable Models Powered by TraceParts

Two leading suppliers join forces to boost CAD Engineers’ design productivity.

St Romain, France, 10 May 2010 – RS Components, one of the largest global catalog and web-based distributors of industrial components, has launched a comprehensive library of certified 3D and 2D CAD models of electromechanical components. All models can be downloaded free of charge.

RS partnered with TraceParts, a leading digital engineering 3D content provider to offer the service. Visitors to the RS website will see a rotating 3D model of parts where a model is available, with links to "classic" images to show details of colour or surface finish. A further advantage of the new RS service is that a unique image will exist for all product variants. In the past, families of products were often represented pictorially by one particular popular or high level variant of the product range. Registered users can download models in 23 different neutral and native CAD formats depending on the system. The initial 20,000 of 45,000 electromechanical components are available now. The balance will be added in the coming months. TraceParts will also publish the RS Components catalog to a number of other important CAD vendor websites, providing users with a number of different ways to access the models.

The comprehensive nature of the RS library is unmatched in the industry, bringing the true benefits of 3D CAD modelling to its customers at no extra charge and without the need to download or install additional software. “The use of 3D CAD models in the electronics industry continues to increase,” said Mark Cundle, Technical Marketing Manager, RS Components. “Creating models for use in CAD packages can be a time-consuming process, hindered by the largely non-standardised formats used by a wide variety of CAD packages. Some 3D CAD models are available from manufacturers, but these can be hard to find, or only available by special request. We found TraceParts to be the best partner to help us deliver a comprehensive range of certified 3D models in all major CAD file formats, free of charge, from a single source.”

“We are extremely pleased to partner with an industry leader like RS Components to deliver such an innovative and value-added service to their customers”, explains Gabriel Guigue, TraceParts Managing Director. “Time to market has become a critical issue for all designers worldwide and RS Components’ free CAD download service will bring them huge productivity gains”.

The 2010 eCatalog Conference on the right track for success.

85 e-catalog experts already registered to the event organized on March 3 by TraceParts and its software partners.

TraceParts, a leading digital engineering content company, is organizing on March 3rd the eCatalog Conference in St. Wendel, Germany, together with its partners KiM, crossbase and Plan Software. Despite the economic crisis the event promises to be a major success since 85 electronic catalog experts were already registered by the end of January, exceeding the high levels of 2009.

The eCatalog Conference, which was first held in 2009, is a one-day event organized by TraceParts, KiM, Plan Software and crossbase. Its objective is to present innovative software solutions in the fields of parts catalogs, product and sales configurators, automated generation of print and PDF catalogs and use of CAD data for catalogs. The information event, which is free of charge, is aimed both at parts manufacturers and newcomers with an interest in the area of electronic catalogs. Attendees at the eCatalog Conference have the opportunity to benefit from the extensive experience of software vendors and industrial users, as well as finding out about the latest software solutions from TraceParts, KiM, crossbase and Plan Software.

This year again, the conference agenda includes a series of top-name speakers. Alongside the organizers TraceParts, KiM, crossbase and Plan Software, representatives from leading companies will also be making presentations. Adobe Systems, item Industrietechnik, HAWE Hydraulik and Schaeffler (INA/FAG) have been working closely over several years with the organizers and will be presenting their user experiences and practical examples to the attendees.

Many of the companies taking part this year, such as Bosch Rexroth (the drive & control company), Häfele (furniture fittings), Siemens (industry automation) and WAREMA Renkhoff (sun protection systems), also attended last year eCatalog Conference. However, new TraceParts customers, including Seeger Orbis and maxon motor, will be involved in this year’s conference for the first time. The TraceParts team will also be there to give customers and prospects the opportunity to talk directly to project managers and sales people.

The agenda of the eCatalog Conference is very varied and is designed to meet the multiple needs of users. TraceParts is giving an introduction to advanced searches of components on the TraceParts DVD and the web portal www.tracepartsonline.net together with a brief presentation on elecworks™, the first and only SolidWorks Gold Partner software to design electrical and automation projects, using intelligent 3D electrical models. TraceParts’ partners, KiM, crossbase and Plan Software will also be making presentations.

major highlight of the event will once again be the user reports. Presentations by Adobe Systems, item Industrietechnik, HAWE Hydraulik and Schaeffler (INA/FAG) will explain how to use the products and solutions that are on show.

For example, Karlheinz Lindner from Schaeffler (INA/FAG) will present the system developed in-house known as INA/FAG medias® 5.0. The program is a product finder and consultancy system for roller bearings, plain bearings and linear systems which makes the task of selecting the right bearing easier. It also provides technical data and seamlessly integrated native and neutral CAD data on-the-fly. In addition, users can send questions directly to Schaeffler (INA/FAG) via the system.

Christian Baumgärtner, Managing Director of TraceParts GmbH, believes that the event is already a must in some companies’ event calendars. “The eCatalog Conference in St. Wendel is the perfect opportunity for all the participants to collect a huge amount of technical information in a short time and in a pleasant atmosphere. The presentations given by the organizers provide an overview of new and future developments. The hands-on sessions from item Industrietechnik, HAWE Hydraulik and Schaeffler (INA/FAG) will demonstrate to potential customers that the organizers’ products really do provide the promised benefits in practice and in the long term. In the breaks between the lectures, customers have the opportunity to network with one another and with the companies organizing the event and to make new contacts and develop existing ones. Ensuring that our customers, users and employees can make personal contact with one another is very important for us and forms part of our corporate philosophy. Therefore, the majority of our employees will be attending the conference. In my opinion, the eCatalog Conference is highly successful concept and an event which should be in every diary!”

A survey was carried out among participants of the eCatalog Conference 2009 to find out how satisfied they were with the event. More than 96% were satisfied with the organization, the presentations and the format of the conference. Over 64% of the participants said on the day of the event that the information they had obtained would be used in their future decision-making. The positive results of the survey and the large number of attendees have set high expectations for the eCatalog Conference 2010. Preparations have been underway since mid 2009 and TraceParts and its fellow organizers are looking forward to this year’s event.

Success Story: Alema

Saving time while living up to sustomers´ expectations

ALEMA Group was created in 2002 from a conglomerate of structural aircraft specialists based around firm CEMA, with the aim of meeting all supply chain requirements in the aeronautical industry. The group generates over 90% over its revenues from leading aeronautical companies, including EADS (Airbus, Socata, Sogerma), Dassault Aviation, Safran Group (Turbomeca, Airecelle…), Bombardier and Embraer.

ALEMA Industry, ALEMA Concept, ALEMA Technology, ALEMA Automation and ALEMA Production (including ALEMA Slovakia) employ 250 people and deliver audit and design services in their respective areas of expertise, as well as building industrial production facilities - from equipment through to assembly lines - and robotics for processes and nondestructive testing.

ALTECH, headquartered in Carquefou in France's Loire Atlantique region, joined the group in 2003 to become ALEMA Technology. The company was already an aeronautical specialist and geographically close to the Airbus production sites in Nantes and Saint-Nazaire. Its integration into the group has enabled it to maintain its status as a best-in-class subcontractor for Airbus.

ALEMA Technology employs 13 people. The company specializes in programming 3 to 5-axis CNC machines and designing / creating small-sized machinery, and this is where TraceParts came into the picture in 2003.

Eric Mangeard, Site Manager, explains: "Before 2003, nearly 15% of the equipment design cycle was spent modeling standard elements or off-the-shelf components. A number of parts may have been available in the media supplied by some of the manufacturers, but searches were time-consuming and the results were not always up to standard or available in the native formats of our CAD software. We chose TraceParts without the slightest hesitation, just like the other companies that later joined ALEMA Group. The rich content of its libraries and the fact that the solution integrates seamlessly into CATIA V5 - our primary design software - convinced us beyond any doubt."

The equipment designs at ALEMA Technology are actually produced using the Dassault Systèmes CAD solution. In today's component libraries market, only TraceParts enjoys Software Partner CATIA CAA V5 status, meaning that its solution seamlessly integrates with the CAD software and offers upward compatibility with later releases.

ric Mangeard explains the importance of TraceParts' integration into CATIA: "Finding a component that has been modeled in the right format is already a major advantage, but the process of repatriating, spatially placing and arranging parts in the database could slow down productivity and waste time. With TraceParts integrated into CATIA, components are now correctly inserted into our assemblies and intelligently positioned. All our designers need to do is exit the CAD software, even to free up the TraceParts license, thereby providing an extra source of productivity."

TraceParts - the Airbus profile
In 2005, Airbus brought TraceParts into widespread use and asked its partners to use the solution, especially for designing its production facilities. Airbus asked TraceParts to fine-tune its offering to provide specific content covering the supplier catalogs commonly used by its production sites, as well as customize the component-related information and comply with its specific way of organizing CAD and PLM data.

Subcontractors now have a copy of the TraceParts/Airbus library on a physical storage medium and the same client application for adding components to the CAD database according to the manufacturer's current rules. ALEMA Technology has been using this version since 2005.

"This decision from our main customer confirmed that our initial choice was the right one. We were quickly and easily able to comply with the guidelines laid down by Airbus," says a delighted Eric Mangeard. "Another area of satisfaction is the success that TraceParts has had with component manufacturers, meaning that libraries are continually enriched."

The company receives successive revisions of the specific library from TraceParts on CD-ROMs. Although Alema Technology maintains access to all components, some equipment, manufacturers and suppliers are required by Airbus.

In closing, Eric Mangeard mentions the relations with the sales and technical teams at TraceParts: "We sometimes call the hotline and technical support, such as if we notice a fault with a particular component after reinstalling libraries following a new CATIA revision. In all cases, the answer is fast and effective. TraceParts' responsiveness and quality are two important aspects for us, since we are also committed to delivering the same values to our own customers."

Success Story: Tefal

TraceParts gives us greater control over our product facilities

Employing 19,000 people around the world, SEB Group holds a 10% share of the global market for small electrical appliances, worth an estimated 26 billion euros (laundry, personal care, preparation of food & drink, electrical cooking appliances, cleaning and home comforts), and nearly 15% of the global cookware market (skillets, saucepans, stockpots, pressure cookers, and so on) valued at 6.5 billion euros.

The group's roots can be traced back to 1857 in the village of Selongey near Dijon, France, with the creation of the Antoine Lescure tinplate factory. The Lescure factory was passed down through the generations before becoming SEB (Société d’Emboutissage de Bourgogne - Burgundy Metal Stamping Company) in 1944. Metal transforming continues to represent one of the group's core businesses.

Such success stories as the "super pressure cooker" in the 1950s helped fast-track SEB Group's internal and external growth. The group currently comprises 20 brands, six of which are marketed worldwide: Tefal (the company joined SEB in 1968), Rowenta, Moulinex, Krups, All-Clad and Lagostina. Other brands are specific to local markets, such as SEB and Calor for France and Belgium. SEB Group sells 80% of its products outside France in over 120 countries. The group sells six products around the world every second!

The Tefal site in Rumilly employs over 2,000 people and also happens to be one of SEB's centers of excellence for cookware. The other centers are located in Brazil, China and Selongey, the birthplace of the founding company. The center at Selongey specializes in pressure cookers and deep bowls.

The Special Machines Department at the Rumilly site features a seven-strong team dedicated to designing the production infrastructure. Stéphane Charvin, project manager in the department, presents the missions facing the team: "Our department's activities span the entire machinery lifecycle, from pre-engineering to commissioning at the production sites, as well as coordinating the various business lines. Some equipment designs are partially or fully outsourced. In addition to our department, an Equipment engineering department designs the press machinery." Tefal controls the metal transformation process, while plastic injection molding and steel / iron casting are outsourced to external providers.

The new requirements of 3D
Tefal gradually migrated from computer-aided drafting to 3D CAD in 2000. The last 2D workstations disappeared in 2003 to make way for Pro/ENGINEER. 50 licenses are now available in the R&D, Equipment and Machinery Departments.

"Two problems cropped up when we were changing over to 3D: some errors, even during the basic modeling of purchased components, and considerable time spent modeling from paper catalogs," explains Stéphane Charvin. "In addition to these two obstacles, which caused assembly problems and lowered our productivity, it was difficult to standardize the parts used in our machines. We started using the different CAD libraries available from manufacturers, but we quickly realized that this first step would not always give us instantly ready-to-use Pro/ENGINEER templates and that we would lose far too much time searching for components. When we tried TraceParts, users were quickly won over by the application and its rich content. We installed floating licenses to cover our needs."

Even greater standardization
The team designs new production facilities and also transforms and fine-tunes existing machines for manufacturing new products. Stéphane Charvin stresses the need to reduce and control the number of different parts used in the studies: "The more we use standardized products for the different machines, the faster and easier it is to troubleshoot machinery or configure them for new products. The TraceParts library is very rich and the easy search feature could lead to an explosion in the number of references used. In TraceParts, we have found a solution to reach our standardization objectives."

An internal library has therefore been created and is populated with elements selected and generated in the TraceParts application, where the priority is pre-saved components. The department's team can also model a special part and add it to the library by applying a comparable classification to the one used in TraceParts. In addition to greater standardization, lists are also more consistent.

"Good synchronization was required between the parameters of the models designed with Pro/ENGINEER and those designed with TraceParts," explains Stéphane Charvin, before concluding: "we received a helping hand from TraceParts and we are more than pleased with the result. This actually applies to all the tasks that we have assigned to them, such as installing new revisions or bringing into compliance with later versions of Pro/ENGINEER. This type of support may seem classic, but it is delivered in strict accordance with our IT security requirements, such as our firewalls. Given the highly competitive market, the entire SEB Group is very particular about protecting its intellectual property rights."

Short design cycles, increased reliability and greater standardization: thanks to TraceParts, Tefal's Special Machines Department is firmly in control of designing and upgrading the brand's production facilities.

Success Story: Emile Maurin

We could not do without TraceParts

The Maurin Group, founded in Lyon in 1871, delivers high-end technical products to all manufacturers in the mechanical engineering industry. Its range features both proprietary products and international brands recognized in their respective specialties for the quality of their products (SKF, Legris, Festo, and so on).

In addition to supplying components, the Maurin Group actively pursues a service policy - consulting, logistics and support - that has firmly strengthened its reputation.

With 25,000 customers in all branches of industry (automotive, transport, machinery, etc.), the group has 25 sites and employs 530 people.

The group offers three product ranges:

- Michaud Chailly for drives and toolings
- Emile Maurin for standard mechanical components, nuts and bolts, fasteners, and metal products
- Béné Inox for stainless steel valves, fittings, and fasteners

The gold standard... for 180,000 products
One could be tempted to describe the group as a "catalog publisher". Finding an engineering firm in France without a copy of a Maurin catalog is clearly a challenge. For over 40 years, its impressive tomes (the seven catalogs for the Emile Maurin brand alone total over 2,000 pages) have been looked upon as reference books by manufacturers in search of quality components. Some even refer to them as bibles...

The Maurin Group, a trailblazer in the supply of e-catalogs, also took a committed approach more than 10 years ago to supply 2D and 3D models.

Delivering an additional service
Didier Maurin, CEO, looks back at the beginnings of its approach: "Manufacturers are always looking to improve design productivity. Redrawing off-the-shelf components does not generate any added value and wastes a lot of time, especially with 3D design. Requests for drawings and models became a common occurrence just over 10 years ago. Because we are constantly striving to meet our customers' expectations, we decided that they should have access to our products in their chosen CAD formats."

An exhaustive range: a strategic choice
Maurin's strategy is to offer every industrial component with the fastest possible delivery times (80% of products are held in inventory). This policy has been extended to the 3D model catalogs, as Didier Maurin explains: "A number of manufacturers, whose products we market, offer their own 3D models, but we have adopted the same strategy for CAD parts as for our catalogs, meaning providing manufacturers with our entire offering as 3D files. This gives users a one-stop shop for finding what they are looking for, without needing to check with a dozen manufacturers."

The group's websites (www.michaud-chailly.fr, www.emile-maurin.fr and www.bene-inox.com) currently boast 180,000 products from their catalogs as 3D CAD models.
These model catalogs are also available in full from the TraceParts website.

Because we could not do without TraceParts
"Many companies in our market sectors select their components from TraceParts, Europe's number one," explains Didier Maurin. "This is especially true of our key accounts in the automotive and aerospace industries. It was important to give them access to our catalogs through that particular channel."

Today, a strong team made of 6 people is in charge at Maurin of modeling and configuring. Every model receives the group's item reference number and is associated with a number of data and documents available to the end user. TraceParts receives impressive parameter files, complete with CAD models in a neutral format. A specific module developed by TraceParts engineers is then responsible for automatically generating the search engine and tools for creating 3D files online. Just a few minutes after being sent by the Maurin Group, each product can be downloaded from www.tracepartsonline.net in one of the countless CAD formats offered by the site, without any need for manual intervention, thereby ensuring the reliability of the data published.

"TraceParts is a serious company and its major development is a source of satisfaction for us, since it guarantees our offering added visibility," concludes Didier Maurin. "The sales and technical teams at TraceParts are fast acting and their services are of high quality. It is particularly important for us, since we are heavily involved in designing and classifying models. I personally consider the TraceParts web site to be an invaluable industrial tool."

Record swim attempt between Germany and Denmark.

TraceParts employee stopped only by toxic algae pollen.

Amberg, November 18, 2009 – Last year Christian, who works at TraceParts as a project manager for 3D catalogs, became the third German in History to successfully swim across the Strait of Gibraltar. He completed the swim without wearing a neoprene swimsuit and in water at a temperature of just 18 degrees Celsius (click here for more details about this 2008 adventure: http://www.traceparts.com/news/PR30092008.asp).

This year he faced his next challenge. This involved conquering the Belt, the stretch of water approximately 25 kilometers wide between Germany and Denmark. Christian was only the tenth person ever to dare attempt crossing the Belt.

His preparations for this challenge had once again gone completely to plan and he was in top form. He had clocked up over 600 kilometers in the water as part of his training, since the start of 2009.

On last August 5th, he entered the 18.5-degree water at Fehmarn, a German island in the Baltic Sea. Due to the huge amount of pollution, he had to fight this time not only against the waves and current, but also against other obstacles, such as the countless jellyfish.

Accompanied by a cutter with his son Vincent on board supporting him, the TraceParts employee covered the first few kilometers, and once he had gone two-thirds of the distance he was on course for an incredible record time.

However, Christian was then faced with a two-kilometer-wide blanket of algae. It quickly became clear that he was unable to swim around it and had to choose a course directly through it. At this moment in time, neither Christian nor the crew of the accompanying local cutter knew that these algae were in bloom and had toxic pollen.

The pollen entered his mouth and nose and was causing him increasing discomfort. Soon after this, Christian first experienced problems with his stomach, which made him physically sick five times. This meant that he could not take any more carbohydrates either. However, giving up was not an option for the long-distance swimmer.

He ploughed his way through the water one kilometer after another, getting ever closer to the Danish coast. The first houses could already be seen on the Danish coast, and with only another 3 kilometers until his destination, he mustered his final strength. But the toxic pollen got the better of Christian and he had to be lifted out of the Baltic Sea exhausted.

His attempt was over after swimming 22 kilometers in four hours and 40 minutes. Christian gave up just three kilometers from the Danish coast, totally exhausted, with signs of poisoning. Sections of the beach were later cordoned off due to the toxic algae pollen that Christian had earlier swum through with persistent self-motivation.

“I will try this crossing three times in total,” said Christian, announcing his intention to swim next year.

The entire TraceParts team are already crossing their fingers for him and we will feature another report on his attempt next year.

Success Story: the “Arc” Upper School of Engineering

“Haute Ecole Arc Ingénierie” - the Arc Upper School of Engineering - pursues its activities in the region of north-west Switzerland...

“Haute Ecole Arc Ingénierie” - the Arc Upper School of Engineering - pursues its activities in the region of north-west Switzerland known as the Arc Jurassien, where biomedical, watchmaking, and broader micromechanical industries are heavily developed.

The school itself is a division of the Haute Ecole Arc. The parent school oversees university level training courses in the fields of applied arts, engineering, health, and economics in the Swiss cantons of Jura and Neuchâtel as well as the French speaking areas of the Berne canton.

Each year, Haute Ecole Arc trains almost 300 Bachelor of Science engineers in five branches of technology: I.T., Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering, and Microtechniques.

In the first year, each of the last four branches above receives a core curriculum in CAD, followed by specialization over the next two years. This tuition is heavily oriented toward design and simulation.

Six classrooms are dedicated to the course and to learning; the school holds 120 CATIA V5 licenses from Dassault Systems. Haute Ecole Arc Ingénierie is indeed an official partner of this software producer and acts as a French language “CATIA call center” for Swiss industries. In addition to its educational activities, the school runs four research and development institutes and undertakes missions on behalf of companies in the region.

Students and teaching staff alike can use the CAD software on their own laptops too by connecting to a license server. Teaching currently takes place at three different geographical locations, but plans are in hand to group all three onto the Neuchâtel site in the near future.

Getting down to essentials more quickly
Raphaël Montavon is a teaching lecturer in specialist schools and is in charge of CAD at Haute Ecole Arc Ingénierie. Montavon explains why in 2002 the teaching staff decided to give its students access to a component library: “The CAD core curriculum supplies the basics of design, and our students naturally learn how to model parts starting from scratch. Once these concepts are mastered, we proceed to more advanced and more complex functions. It is important for them then to be able to concentrate on these. The use of component libraries therefore becomes a must because this speeds up the learning process considerably, avoiding needless modeling from scratch which adds no value. This enables us to go a step further in the teaching and practice of assemblies, simulations, or kinematics, for example. This method is, moreover, a truer reflection of the actual use of CAD in companies.”

TraceParts, without equivalent in the educational field
The choice to use TraceParts was made in 2002. “From a technical and educational point of view, it was the very good integration of their library with CATIA V5 that convinced us.” explains Montavon. “Furthermore, the TraceParts educational offering is original and well suited to the hard facts of the educational world. For example, it is vital for each student to have access to components on any machine or over the network from his or her personal computer without requiring an Internet connection.”

The TraceParts component library is one of the few libraries completely integrated with CATIA – not to mention with SolidWorks, Pro/ENGINEER, Solid Edge, Inventor, TopSolid, and Thinkdesign – that is available under an educational license. This comprises of a TraceParts DVD that can be installed on an unlimited number of teacher and student machines in a given teaching establishment. Haute Ecole Arc Ingénierie has centralized the library contents onto a server and set up a TraceParts client on each machine running CATIA V5. Everyone has access thereby to a unique library that is regularly updated.

The library is used autonomously by students: “They must search by themselves for the components needed for the assemblies,” confirms Montavon. “Over and above any time savings made in our teaching schedule, the sheer richness of the information linked with the TraceParts components allowed us to tackle certain data management aspects, in particular the printing of parts lists. Our objective, remember, is to reflect the reality of the process in an industrial context.”

Schools are increasingly subject to tempting proposals from software vendors attempting to make their product known to tomorrow's decision makers. That's fair enough, but their support must also be up to the task: “Our relations with TraceParts are excellent,” concludes Montavon. “We really do get the sensation of being considered an industrial customer: responsive technical support, anticipated updates when needed to accommodate our calendar constraints, etc. And I also believe our students, as well as our teaching staff undertaking research missions on behalf of the local industrial fabric, are just as demanding as a professional user.”

VX CAD/CAM and TraceParts partner to deliver over 100 million free 3D native models to VX user community.

Access to suppliers’ parts catalogs has never been so easy from within VX interface.

Melbourne, USA and Saint Romain, France - April 7, 2009 – VX Corporation and TraceParts today announce the immediate availability of a free exclusive online parts library, directly accessible from the VX user interface. Thanks to this strong partnership, thousands of VX users worldwide will now have instant access to best-in-class native 3D models coming from leading parts suppliers’ catalogs including Advantech, Asco Numatics, Bosch Rexroth, Cepex, CGI, Facom, Festo, IFM, Igus, INA/FAG, Legris, Mädler, Misumi, Norelem, Nozag, Rabourdin, Rud, Schmersal, Schmalz, Schneider Electric, Sherex, SNR, Telemecanique, Zimm, and more.

VX users can launch the specific TraceParts online library by using a menu inside the new 2009 version of VX CAD/CAM. They can then directly browse one specific catalog or use a powerful search engine for cross-catalogs searches based on the dimensions or other technical properties of the part they need. After selecting a part, the user has access to a real-time 3D preview and a summary of all its Bill of Materials (BoM) attributes. The last step is to select the VX native format and put the part inside the caddy, allowing users to get several parts at once. Users can then either directly download the VX 3D models or receive them by email.

“The extensive library of TraceParts’ online catalogs will bring incredible productivity benefits to the extended VX user community,” says Mark Vorwaller, VX Co-Founder, President & CEO. “Quick and easy access to accurate and up-to-date off-the-shelf components is critical for design and manufacturing engineers because it allows them to concentrate on adding immediate value to their company’s products. That’s really a key issue in today’s challenging economy.”

“We are extremely pleased to partner with VX because they have always been a technology pioneer in the CAD/CAM industry,” explains Gabriel Guigue, Managing Director of TraceParts. “Independent surveys show that over 70% of CAD models that a mechanical designer adds to its parts list are actually purchased. It is therefore critical for parts vendors to get additional product exposure from this new TraceParts/VX Online Library.”

TraceParts Catalogs Library Reaches Autodesk Inventor 2010 Product Certification.

100+ million native 3D models are just mouse clicks away from Inventor User Community.

St Romain, France – March 25, 2009 - Trace Software today announced that its TraceParts library of suppliers and standard parts catalogs has successfully passed the challenging Autodesk Inventor 2010 certification. Through this technical and marketing achievement, Trace Software reinforces its long-lasting partnership with Autodesk, having been a member of the worldwide Autodesk Developer Network (ADN) for more than 15 years.

The TraceParts 3D component library is one of the largest parts libraries in the world, offering 100+ million 3D CAD models & 2D drawings, including both industry standard parts as well as products from hundreds of manufacturers’ catalogs. Users can browse or search for products, configure product options, create dynamic 3D previews, and insert native Inventor 3D product models directly into their designs together with their Bill of Materials (BoM) attributes.

“Engineers are far more dependent on manufactured content than ever before, and this certification demonstrates our commitment to meeting the needs of our global customers,” said Robert “Buzz” Kross, vice president of Manufacturing Solutions Division at Autodesk.

“TraceParts provides easy and quick access to millions of native-format Autodesk Inventor models of the parts our customers use every day. So now, the Inventor Community can concentrate on designing and innovating new products instead of wasting time and effort modeling parts they don’t manufacture.”

"We are extremely pleased to be working so close with Autodesk," said Gabriel Guigue, Managing Director of TraceParts. "Time to market is crucial to Autodesk Inventor customers and we know that over 70% of CAD models that a mechanical designer adds to his parts list are later purchased. This is why the strongly believe this Inventor 2010 certification will bring a fantastic additional exposure to our many 3D catalogs.”

The first 3DContentCentral® content partner demonstrates its commitment to the SolidWorks community.

As a member of the Trace Software Group, TraceParts will join the SolidWorks World Conference being held in Orlando, Florida, from Feb. 8-11. The productivity benefits of the TraceParts 3D library of supplier's catalogs will be demonstrated in the Partner Pavilion, booth #307.

The time saved in this way allows the designer to spend more time on the more critical stages of the design process.

TraceParts leveraged the SolidWorks openness to develop an extensive library of international standard SolidWorks-native 3D parts. Designers from all industries, and especially those involved in Industrial Machinery, Tooling, Automotive and Aerospace design, benefit from all the most commonly used components in mechanical design from the largest names of the mechanical industry: Advantech, Asco Numatics, Bosch Rexroth, Cepex, CGI, Contrinex, Dirak, Euchner, Facom, Festo, Ganter, GGB, Halder, IFM, Igus, INA/FAG, Kabelschlepp, Legrand, Legris, Mädler, Misumi, Nozag, Schmalz, Schmersal, Schneider Electric, Sherex, Sick, SNR, Stauffenberg, TEA, Trelleborg, Vanel and more.

“We are delighted to exhibit at this year’s SolidWorks World Conference”, says Gabriel Guigue, Managing Director of TraceParts. “For many years now we’ve been delivering tens of thousands of CAD files every single day to designers from our portal tracepartsonline.net, and it’s always a great pleasure to meet some of them face to face!”

Running Snail Racing Team – very good results in 2008

The Running Snail Racing Team of the Amberg-Weiden College sponsored by TraceParts has once again achieved numerous successes in the 2008 season

Amberg, December 1, 2008 – After the rollout of the new racecar RS08 in May, the “Running Snail Racing Team“ achieved an extremely successful season.

After the Michelin competition was won in May (as we reported), the actual kick-off of the season began in Silverstone by garnering a respectable 10th place among a total of 72 participating teams.

A few improvements were added and then it was off to Hockenheim. This competition had the most participants in Germany to date with a total of 78 international teams. Nonetheless, it was possible to land in another notable position, 11th place, which resulted from the following placements:

Acceleration: 6th place
Skid pad: 11th place
Autocross: 27th place
Endurance: 13th place
Fuel economy: 4th place

But the greatest highlight of this event was winning the “Formula Student Germany Sportsmanship Award“, which is presented for team spirit, fairness and willingness to help.

After the very good results in Hockenheim and Silverston, the next stop was the SAE Italy competition. Maranello, to be precise – to the “Pista di Fiorano,” which is the Ferrari test track.

Although it is not the largest European competition with its 31 participating teams, the competitive environment is in the top leagues. Here the “Running Snail Racing Team“ was among the frontrunners in all areas, which was honored with an overall ranking of 5th place. The placements in the individual disciplines:

Skid pad: 1st place
Acceleration: 2nd place
Fuel economy: 3rd place

TraceParts would like to express its warmest congratulations and hopes that the Running Snail Racing Team of Amberg in Bavaria makes another successful start into the racing season 2009.

Formula Student
The Formula Student is an international engineering competition that was founded in the US in 1981 and is now held in seven different countries each year. The main organizer is the largest engineering association in the world, the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers).
The Formula Student is based on the idea that a company places an order for the construction of a race car prototype for amateur race car drivers. The vehicle has to fulfill certain requirements and therefore the competition is conceived in such a way that all aspects are evaluated, from the design to the cost control and from the marketing to the practical usability.

During the annual competitions in the US, Germany, England, Italy Australia, Brazil and Japan, the race cars go up against a large international group of participants.

Disciplines

Skid pad:
The skid pad is a horizontal figure eight whose circles have a diameter of 15.25 m. Each team may provide two drivers who have two tries each. The quickest try is the one that is evaluated.

Acceleration:
The acceleration competition measures the acceleration of the car. The vehicle is accelerated from a standing position for 75 m. Each team may provide two drivers who have two tries each. The quickest try is the one that is evaluated.

Autocross:
The car has to be steered along a handling course that is 800 m long. It includes straight lines, hairpin turns and slalom sections. Each team may provide two drivers and each driver has two tries. The quickest try is the one that is evaluated. The drivers do not have a training round.

Endurance:
The endurance competition is the most important one. The vehicle has to be steered along a circular course that is 22 km long and resembles an autocross. The driver is changed after 11 km. In this process the engine and ignition have to be switched off and then start again without outside help. Usually several race cars are on the track at the same time, which however do not race against each other but against the clock. Special passing zones are furnished for faster cars. This competition is so important because it results in more than a third of all points and because nearly half of the cars do not make it through the entire 22 km.

Fuel economy:
The fuel consumption is measured during the endurance competition. The most economical team received 50 points in 2008. As of 2009, the consumption is ranked more highly and up to 100 points will be awarded.

Swimming from Europe to Africa

An employee of TraceParts crosses the Straits of Gibraltar

Amberg, September 30, 2008 – For years, swimming long distances has been a hobby of Christian’s, who works at TraceParts as a project manager. He has already completed 40 long distance competitions, of which 20 were in the ocean. The individual distances that he had previously covered had amounted to two, five and ten kilometers.

Early this year, he faced an extreme challenge with one of his swimming partners: traversing the Straits of Gibraltar. About twenty kilometers of open sea, where the European and African continents are separated from each other. Only two Germans had previously mastered this stretch since 1928.

To adequately prepare for this distance, he scheduled a weekly training allotment of up to 30 kilometers at the beginning of the year. Christian therefore completed more than 600 kilometers in the water during the preparatory period alone.

On July 13, 2008, the date had arrived. Due to the constantly worsening weather conditions, the start date had to be set two days earlier than planned.

Setting out in Europe near Gibraltar, Christian and his swimming partner jumped into the chilly 18 degree waters accompanied by a guide boat. At that point they were not sure where they would set foot on African ground, because this essentially depends on the predominant currents.

During such an undertaking, a constant self-motivation is crucial, since the temptation to quit and just hold on to the accompanying boat continues to grow with the distance covered. The external circumstances of such a crossing are also precarious. Warm and cold masses of water come together in the narrow straits and generate strong winds. It is also important to keep an eye on the heavy ship traffic. Additionally, the danger of coming in contact with various ocean inhabitants is more than 90%.

The fact that nothing is predictable about such an adventurous project, compared to the training conditions in a swimming pool or a lake, was shown when his swimming partner had to quit about halfway into the stretch because the high waves made him seasick.

The will to persevere by the TraceParts employee was thus put to a hard test: “From that point on I was swimming for everyone, for my family, for friends, for Germany, for TraceParts”, says Christian, whose strength was diminishing as the water continued to get colder.

After five hours, 32 minutes and 19.5 swum kilometers, Christian arrived in one piece but exhausted on the African coast in Morocco.

His efforts were rewarded by the certificate of the Gibraltar Swimming Association, which authenticates that he is one of the few who has mastered this athletic challenge.

Christian is hereby the third German fellow, second Bavarian and first Upper Palatinate resident who succeeded in this incredible athletic achievement.

The entire TraceParts team expresses its warmest congratulations and is eagerly awaiting the next challenge, the Belt crossing, a crossing from Germany to Denmark in the Baltic Sea with a length of 25 km, which is planned for August 2009.

Sherex to offer engineers and designers 3D models of “as installed” rivet nuts and plugs.

Wilton, New Hampshire – July 22, 2008 – rivet nut manufacturer Sherex is now using the TraceParts Internet service to provide a 3D interactive online catalog for engineers and designers. Sherex customers will be able to configure rivet nut fasteners along with passage sealing plugs and then download 3D CAD models of the products in an “as installed state” directly into their designs.

Sherex offers an extensive line of rivet nuts that are ideal for providing load-bearing threads in thin materials and blind applications. In addition to manufacturing the highest-quality rivet nuts in the world, Sherex also provides sealing plugs that install in one step—and provide a leak-proof seal every time.

“Our customers were asking for 3D models of our products to include in their designs”, says Jill Caffery, Sherex director of marketing. “The catch was, they wanted the models delivered in an ‘as installed’ state rather than ‘as purchased’ state; and on top of that they wanted them delivered in a variety of CAD system formats. TraceParts allows us to satisfy both needs.”

“Sherex has been providing sealing solutions in the highly competitive automotive and fluid power industries for over 30 years,” said Bob Noftle, president of TraceParts, Inc. “They are consistently upgrading their product offerings based on the needs of their customers. In 1989 they expanded their product line to include blind rivet nuts, and subsequently added brass inserts, installation tools and other specialty fasteners. TraceParts helps Sherex strengthen relationships with its customers by saving them time and helping them to make better design decisions faster than with paper-based catalogs.”

First Place At Michelin Again

The Running Snail Racing Team of the Amberg-Weiden College sponsored by TraceParts has won the Michelin competition again in 2008, just as in the previous year.

Amberg - July 8, 2008 – The Formula Student is an international engineering competition that was founded in the US in 1981 and is now held in seven different countries each year. The main organizer is the world’s largest engineer’s society, the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers).

The Formula Student is based on the idea that a company orders the construction of a race car prototype for amateur race car drivers. The vehicle has to fulfill certain requirements, which means that the competition is conceived in such a way that all aspects are evaluated, from the design to the cost control and from the marketing to the practical usability.
During the annual competitions in the US, Germany, England, Italy Australia, Brazil and Japan, the race cars go up against a large international group of participants.

For a long time there were no specific Formula Student tires that matched the small race cars. The tires that were used were therefore often unsuitable and very expensive on top, since they had to be imported from overseas.

Michelin responded to this challenge several years ago and developed tires with a mixture that specifically matched the race cars. This prompted Dr. Astrid Kurth, who is in charge of the Michelin college marketing in Karlsruhe, to create a competition for all German Formula Student teams.

This year a graphic illustration of the Michelin Bibendum as a team member was requested. After the final round at the German corporate headquarters in Karlsruhe, the winner was clear: just as in the year before, the first place was awarded to the Running Snail Team of the Amberg-Weiden College, which made an impression with its successful photo montage that showed the Michelin man next to the Running Snail race car.

TraceParts GmbH would like to express its warmest congratulations and hopes that the Running Snail Racing Team makes another successful start into the racing season 2008.
It is also worth mentioning that Michelin has been a very loyal customer of TraceParts since 1995. Three successful partners have therefore come together here.

CAD.de, the largest and most active German-speaking community for CAD-CAM-CAE and EDM/PDM/PLM, publishes millions of 3D-CAD models which have been certified by parts manufacturers.

Amberg - 21 April 2008 - TraceParts, one of the world's leading publishers of 3D engineering content, today announced its strategic partnership with CAD.de.

The partnership allows component manufacturers to make their 3D product catalogues downloadable directly on CAD.de, in addition to the many already existing partners’ portals. With 81,000 users, the CAD.de community is the largest and most active community for CAD-CAM-CAE and EDM/PDM/PLM in the German-speaking region.

"TraceParts CAD.de edition, i.e. 3D standards and manufacturers’ catalogs available as free downloads, fit extremely well to the portal's current service offering. This 3D service now seamlessly complements the CAD.de network", says Albert Ranig, Managing Director of CAD.de.

"The integration on CAD.de provides an additional distribution channel among design and mechanical engineers for our client’s 3D standard parts and product data ", states Christian Baumgärtner, Managing Director of TraceParts GmbH.

About CAD.de
Online since May 2000, CAD.de has grown to become the largest CAD-CAM-CAE community in the German-speaking region with a current active member base of 81,000 and more than 2.2 million unique visits per month. One of the most active areas are the more than 500 CAx product forums with over 1.4 million contributions. The forums are divided into the following product areas: AEC, CAD, CAE, CAM, CIM, EDM/PDM/PLM, FEM and NC/CNC. At this time over 170 forums are administered by highly-competent moderators. CAD.de is built on the principle of "Give and take", which ensures a wide spectrum of opinions and guarantees CAD.de's independence. Moreover, CAD.de is the center of a network which consists of a series of unofficial help pages for individual products, and which continues on the Internet pages of important providers and manufacturers through the use of the CAD.de forums.
Alibre and TraceParts Provide Easy Access to Millions of 3D Models

TraceParts Component Library Provides 3D Catalogs in the Alibre Design Native Format.

Richardson, TX - October 9, 2007 - Alibre, Inc. and TraceParts, Inc. today announced immediate availability of a new TraceParts online portal providing the rapidly growing Alibre customer base direct access to the entire TraceParts parts library. The TraceParts library is one of the biggest parts libraries in the world, offering 100+ million 3D CAD models & 2D drawings, including both industry standard parts as well as products from hundreds of manufacturers.

The TraceParts library is directly accessible from within the user interface of Alibre Design Professional and Expert, and 3D parts are available in the Alibre Design native format allowing them to be directly inserted into designs without translation.
The library can also be accessed directly at www.tracepartsonline.net/ws/alibre, and couples powerful search capabilities, 3D dynamic previews and an easy to use interface that enables users to browse the large parts library to quickly locate and retrieve parts that can be directly inserted into a design.

According to Greg Milliken, CEO of Alibre, the new relationship helps design and manufacturing companies improve their overall design efficiency by leveraging standard off-the-shelf components freeing them to spend the majority of their time on their own design and manufacturing innovations.

"The massive TraceParts library delivers immediate value to our customers," said Milliken. "It's good practice to use off-the-shelf parts and products whenever possible because it reduces cost and decreases design time. The wider the selection the better, and the TraceParts library offers one of the widest selections on the market."

"We are pleased to be working with Alibre," said Bob Noftle, President of TraceParts, Inc. "Alibre's growing popularity, great price/performance and simple user interface are expanding the market by attracting users who have not previously been able to afford or learn 3D. We believe this large and under-served market is an exciting marketing opportunity for all the parts vendors who selected TraceParts as their preferred partner to create and publish their CAD catalogs. These new users will get a lot of value from our 3D content, and Alibre's position as the value leader provides us a unique opportunity to reach them."

About Alibre
Alibre Inc. develops and markets Alibre Design™, the fastest growing parametric 3D solid modeling software for mechanical design and manufacturing. One-fifth the cost of comparable software, Alibre Design delivers quick ROI, ease-of-use, rich functionality and unique real-time support, and is enabling small and medium-sized businesses and workgroups to put 3D CAD on every engineer's desk, similar to utilities like Word or Excel.
CONCORD, Mass., January 31, 2007 - SolidWorks Corporation today announced a comprehensive redesign of its 3D ContentCentral® Web site that presents online catalogs in a common format, enables engineers to quickly find appropriate 3D CAD models, and accelerates the product design process. A standardized view of millions of product models reduces time spent searching through supplier catalogs and frees engineers to spend more time designing better products.

This new version of 3D ContentCentral is free to registered users and is available in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese. Users may now access supplier product information, 3D CAD models and 2D drawings in a consistent format and quickly complete cross-catalog searches to find the desired component. 3D ContentCentral's new interface and multi-language support address a growing global demand for online content. 3D ContentCentral currently hosts more than 175 supplier catalogs and showcases "supplier certified" models which represent millions of part numbers. In addition, 3D ContentCentral offers quick access to more than 5,300 models contributed by the 3D ContentCentral user community which are featured in 3D ContentCentral's User Library.

Catalogs available on 3D ContentCentral allow engineers to streamline product development by finding and configuring a supplier part or assembly they need in seconds, not weeks. They can then download the 3D model or 2D drawing directly into their design, checking form and fit prior to purchase. 3D catalogs save product designers valuable design time which they would otherwise spend looking through paper catalogs or on the phone with the supplier's sales support staff to find and configure a supplier component.

The 3D-enabled catalogs available on 3D ContentCentral showcase everything from sensors to large motors. Components from global suppliers such as SMC Corp. of America, Misumi USA, Inc., CarrLane, Omron, and Bimba Manufacturing Co. are among those featured on 3D ContentCentral.

"Getting up-to-date design information on the Internet is a key aspect of how our users design products," said Lynne Wilson, SolidWorks vice president and general manager, content solutions. "The new 3D ContentCentral Web site, with its enhanced navigation and cross catalog search, was designed with a single goal of making it an everyday resource for product designers to download 3D models in all CAD formats. We strongly believe that the new Web site will continue to accelerate the adoption of 3D ContentCentral by the CAD community as the premier online resource for CAD component models on the Internet."

All 3D components can be conveniently accessed for free via SolidWorks' 3D ContentCentral service at www.3dcontentcentral.com. Over the past year, more than 228,000 users have registered on 3D ContentCentral to find, configure, and download 3D part models or 2D designs for their product development. 3D ContentCentral allows users to browse supplier catalogs and product categories such as tooling, power transmission, or pneumatics via the Internet, or directly from within SolidWorks software.

"Having access to a multitude of component manufacturers from a single Web site saves time and effort in locating the part models I need," said Ricky Jordan, senior mechanical design engineer at Dynetics, Inc. "Instead of going from one supplier Web site to another, I can quickly and easily search 3D ContentCentral and find the models I need in a single location."
