Partitions
Why do I need to install the catalogs on an NTFS partition? An NTFS partition is capable of managing folders containing many more files than a FAT or FAT32 partition. Installing all the catalogs proposed would exceed the size limitations of FAT and FAT32 partitions (too many files), which is why an NTFS partition is required. Registration (top) Trial license What are the limitations with the trial version? The only limitation with the trial version is its validity period. The trial license has a validity period of 10 days. During the trial period, TraceParts does not have any limitations in terms of features or content. How can I extend the trial period?
Where do I enter the code for extending the trial period? The code received is entered in the TraceParts "Protection" window. It opens automatically when TraceParts is started if the trial period has expired; otherwise, it can be accessed via the TraceParts "?/Protection" menu option. I have purchased TraceParts and I have just received my order. Do I need to uninstall the trial version? No! If you are using the same release, uninstalling the trial version to install the version received would be a waste of time, as they are identical! Simply remove the trial period limitation by implementing the protection corresponding to your order (code, key, single license or floating license). A trial version has been installed on my workstation. If I uninstall it and then install a new trial version, will it work? Yes ... if the first trial version was installed less than 10 days ago. If the first trial version was installed more than 10 days ago, you will need to request an extension via the form on the following page: http://www.traceparts.com/support/helpdesk.asp#hd4 Single license Where can I find my license number? It can be found on the license agreement sent with the DVD. It is a yellow sheet. Where do I enter my license number? The license number is entered in the TraceParts "Protection" window: ![]() This window can be accessed:
Where do I enter the registration code? The registration code is entered in the "Protection" window (as shown in the screenshot above; see "Where do I enter my license number?"). Note: the "Registration codes" field is only active if the user and company names have first been entered in the "User" and "Company" fields in the "Protection" window. Whenever I start TraceParts, the "Invalid code" error is displayed, but TraceParts starts anyway. Why? This error may be irritating, but it is not critical and may be generated when TraceParts is code-protected. To remove it:
I have just reinstalled TraceParts. Do I need to re-register it? Yes: if the program is code-protected, in which case a new code is required when TraceParts is reinstalled (ask for the code via the request form on the following page: http://www.traceparts.com/support/license.asp). No: if the program is key-protected (USB or parallel). I have just reinstalled TraceParts, but the registration code provided for the previous installation does not work. What should I do? You need to re-register the program on the TraceParts website at http://www.traceparts.com/support/license.asp After changing from a fixed single license to a school license, do I need to re-register the program? Yes, so that you can receive the "traceparts.lf" file containing the school license (see "Registration / School license") School license After registering the license, I received the "traceparts.lf" file. What is it for? The "traceparts.lf" file contains the school license ordered. It must be copied to each computer on which TraceParts is installed. I have ordered licenses for several CAD programs. Will I have to install several license files? No. The "traceparts.lf" license file supplied after registering the license contains all the licenses ordered. I already have a school license. I have ordered an additional license for a new CAD program. Do I need a new license file? Yes. We cannot update school license files over the Internet. Where do I put the "traceparts.lf" file? You need to copy it to the %TraceParts installation directory%\Licenses\TraceParts, where it will replace the file added when TraceParts was installed. Note: by default, the path pointing to "traceparts.lf" is c:\program files\Trace Software\TraceParts\Licenses\TraceParts". Can I re-use the "traceparts.lf" file installed from one computer to another? No! Once TraceParts has been started on a workstation, the "traceparts.lf" file is modified to only work on that particular computer. If the modified "traceparts.lf" file is copied to another machine, TraceParts will refuse to work on that machine with the file. How do I install the school license on several workstations? By adding copies of traceparts.lf that have never been used to each workstation. On startup, "the machineID does not match the current license" error is displayed and TraceParts does not start up. Why?
In all cases, the license file (traceparts.lf) must be replaced by a copy that has never been used and which was received when registering the school license. Floating license (NLM) Why did I not receive the activation code for the floating license with the TraceParts DVD? Because the activation codes for a floating license are calculated according to a number that depends on the machine on which the NLM server is installed. ... there is no way that our services can predict what the number is going to be. What advantages does NLM v4 have over NLM v3? The main differences between the two versions are as follows:
To do so, go to the "Details/Floating Licenses" menu option and then click on the token to be released. Click on "Release" for the token to be released. After upgrading from NLMv3 to NLMv4, can I reuse the codes supplied for NLMv3? No. You will need to ask for new codes via the request form on the following page: http://www.traceparts.com/support/license.asp#l2 The activation codes for the floating license are ignored by NLM. What should I do? When entering the activation codes manually, ensure that you enter them one by one. If all the codes are entered in one go, they are considered to be invalid and will be ignored. Note: activation codes have the following structure: xxxxxx-yyyyyy (where xxxxx and yyyyy are hexadecimal numbers). Why are there several activation codes? There are always at least three activation codes. One of which corresponds to the activation of the license for the CAD software with which TraceParts will be used (e.g. CATIA, Solidworks and Solid Edge). The others correspond to the "DXF 2D" and "DWG 2D" formats provided free of charge with any license. After entering the activation codes manually, there is no description. How can I add one? Via the "File/Set Software description" menu option in the NLM administration module. The corresponding identification numbers and CAD software/formats or add-ins are as follows:

Paths
Can I use UNC paths for the different TraceParts directories? Yes. Can TraceParts be used with the DFS system? Yes, of course. As the DFS system is managed by Windows, it is fully transparent for TraceParts. Can the working, cache and temporary directories all be the same? No, definitely not, because TraceParts would not be able to work correctly. Are there any restrictions concerning the paths used by TraceParts? Yes:
Yes. SQL Server What is the point of using databases on SQL Server? SQL Server databases are basically faster than the Microsoft Access databases used by default by TraceParts. But you need SQL Server. Can all the databases used by TraceParts be transferred to an SQL server? No. The only databases that can be transferred to an SQL server are:
Refer to the page entitled "Using an SQL server". Why can I not simply import the index database into the SQL server instead of rebuilding it? When you import a Microsoft Access database into SQL Server, the database loses its indexes. That is why you are advised to let TraceParts build the parts index itself on the SQL server. Important: Databases must be set to compatibility level 70 when TraceParts build the parts index.
Documents How can I obtain the documents and install them locally? If the workstation on which TraceParts is installed does not have access to the Internet, the documents will not be available. To receive the documents, contact us (using the forms on the page at http://www.traceparts.com/support/helpdesk.asp#hd3) Use (top)
Starting TraceParts
Miscellaneous (top)What is the best way of starting TraceParts? Via its icon Note: some software (such as Pro/Engineer 2001, and Inventor v5 and earlier) do not have a TraceParts icon, but only the menu. TraceParts and the CAD software are open, but I cannot insert parts into the CAD program. What should I do? The link between the two programs has not been established. Go to the CAD program and click on the TraceParts icon (or go to the "TraceParts/Insert part" menu option). TraceParts will start flashing in the Windows taskbar or will appear in the foreground. This means that the link between the two programs is now active. Insertion Where can I find the files containing the parts inserted by TraceParts? By default, the files containing the inserted parts can be found in the TraceParts working directory (see "Configuration / System - Directories"). You can also modify TraceParts' default behavior, so that it prompts you to specify where to put the file(s) containing the part for each insertion (see "Configuration - Insertion and Export", the "Change the destination part directory before insertion" option). How do I change the location of the files containing the inserted parts? There are two ways:
See "Configuration - Insertion and Export", the "Change the destination part directory before insertion" option. Can the parts inserted by TraceParts in the trial version still be used once the trial period has expired? Yes, of course. Once a part has been inserted, it has no further link with TraceParts. Can the parts inserted by TraceParts still be used once TraceParts has been uninstalled? Yes. When using TraceParts with a floating license, is there any way to know who is using a license at any given moment? Yes, with version 4 of the floating license manager ("NLM"), you can find out the use of the licenses at all times. Refer to the question "What advantages does NLM v4 have over NLM v3?" Can all the catalogs produce 3D & 2D parts? Yes, all but: WASI, WASI TECHNICS, RINGFEDER et TAT (that are still underdeveloppement). I have several versions of my CAD software on my workstation. How can I use TraceParts with one or the other? TraceParts can only insert parts in a version of the same software at any one time. The version to be used is chosen for the first time when installing TraceParts. To change the version of the CAD software that TraceParts has to use, you must reinstall the driver for the CAD software. For example, TraceParts has been installed for CATIA V5R15GA, but users now want to use it for CATIA V5R16SP2. Simply reinstall the driver as described in "Advanced use > Adding and removing CAD drivers". Is TraceParts compatible with Windows 64-bit Edition? Yes, TraceParts is compatible with Windows 64-bit Edition (except Windows Vista 64 bits). Is TraceParts compatible with 64-bit versions of CAD software? Yes, TraceParts is compatible with 64-bit versions of CAD software. please refere to "System requirements" What is the easiest way of moving TraceParts from one location to another? The easiest and safest way of moving TraceParts from one location to another is to uninstall it and then reinstall it in the new location. [ Back to the top ] |
