Principle

The use of TraceParts is simple. The principle is as follows (assuming that the CAD software in which the insertions are to be made is already running):

Starting TraceParts

TraceParts can be started in three ways:
1. Using the icon present in the CAD software interface
2. Using the "Insert part" option of the "TraceParts" menu present in the CAD (here in Inventor - the layout may change according to the software)

3. Clicking "TraceParts" in the taskbar

In all cases, TraceParts will be placed in the foreground.

First start (initialization)
TraceParts can be started for the first time in the following ways, going from the simplest to the most complicated:
1. Click on the icon present in the CAD software interface
2. Select "Insert part" in the "TraceParts" menu present in the CAD software interface (here in Inventor - the layout may change according to the software).

3. Start TraceParts from its icon on the desktop, , then launch the CAD software and click on the icon present in the CAD software interface.
4. Start TraceParts from the start menu , then start the CAD software and click on the icon present in the CAD software interface.
5. Start TraceParts by double clicking on "TraceParts.exe" () located in the TraceParts installation directory (default location "C:\Program files\Trace Software\TraceParts"), start the CAD software and click on the icon present in the CAD software interface.

Important In cases 3 to 5, do not forget to click on the icon (or select "Insert part" in the “TraceParts” menu), otherwise the link between TraceParts and the CAD software will not work and it will be impossible to insert parts.

Selection of a Part

Double click the thumbnail of the part to be inserted.

Note: To find the part, use the quick or advanced searches if necessary ("PartFinder" tab).

Definition of the Part Characteristics

This is done in the "PartDetail" tab which is automatically displayed after selection of a part.

The definition of the characteristics can be carried out in several steps.

WARNING: Parts formerly Web2CAD:

Parts formerly Web2CAD can be seen in TraceParts, but can only be accessed from Internet.

A warning will be displayed for these parts in the instance selector as shown below:

Just click this link and the web browser will open and displayed the selected part.

Notes
  • No direct insertion for these parts. The selected part will be send by email with an attached zip file.
  • A free TraceParts Online account is required. This account can be created on first use.

Insertion

The "Insert part" button is displayed only in the last step of definition of the part characteristics.
=> Click on to insert the part (there is an equivalent of this button in the "File" menu).

=> According to the TraceParts configuration (see "Insertion and export"), a window may open in order to change the working directory, change the name of the file containing the part to be inserted, add a prefix and/or add a suffix.

=> TraceParts will be minimized and the part will be inserted in the CAD.

Notes:
  • It is possible to use the "Insert part" option of the TraceParts "File" menu to trigger the insertion.
  • If the CAD software in which the insertion is to be made is not running, the parts will be generated (and the files containing them created in the working directory), but nothing else will happen
  • Can all the catalogs produce 3D & 2D parts? Yes, all but: WASI, WASI TECHNICS, RINGFEDER et TAT (that are still underdeveloppement).

Insertion Options

By default, TraceParts inserts the part in the current assembly.

Notes:
- If there is no assembly being used, the part will be inserted in a new file.
- For the part to be systematically inserted in a new file:
     - Go to the "TraceParts" menu of the CAD software
     - Uncheck "Insertion into current assembly"

Special Case of CATIA V5

The insertion process of a part in CATIA V5 is a little different from that of the other CAD programs. Once TraceParts is minimized, take the following actions:

1) The CATIA interface comes to the foreground; select a product under which to place the part

2) Once the product has been selected, choose the insertion point of the part in the product.

3) The part is inserted

Note: When an insertion is made in an empty product, the display is automatically centered on the part inserted.

4) End of process

Closing TraceParts

TraceParts closes only if the CAD software from which it was initially started is closed.

If the CAD software is not closed, clicking on the TraceParts close box will only remove it from the desktop, but the application will continue to run in the background in order to open immediately if necessary.
