When TraceParts has to insert a part in a CAD software, the part is created and placed in a file in the appropriate format, then inserted into the CAD application.

This file is automatically named and systematically created in the TraceParts working directory.

By default, the working directory is set by the TraceParts configuration (see System - Directories").

The "Insertion and Export" option allows modification of the default behavior of TraceParts at the time of an insertion.

Actions can be taken on:
  • The working directory (without going into the configuration for this);
  • The name of the files created;
  • What TraceParts must do if the file that it is to create already exists in the working directory;
  • The way in which the BOM information must be created.

    Change of Working Directory (top)

    Change the destination part directory before insertion
    If checked, a dialog box displays on each insertion and allows the user to change the working directory on the fly (see below).

    Notes:
    • The path proposed by default is the last path used.
    • The path can be selected using the icon.
    • The "Default" button selects the working directory path set in the configuration.
    • If the working directory entered does not exist, TraceParts will ask whether to create it. The insertion process will be suspended if the answer is no.

    Names of the Generated Files (top)

    TraceParts automatically names the files containing the inserted parts.

    The way in which TraceParts names these files can be modified.

    Change the file name before insertion
    If checked, a dialog box displays on each insertion and allows the user to change the file name preset by TraceParts (see below).

    Note: Illegal characters (such as "/", "\", "#") will be automatically replaced by "_".

    Add a prefix to the file name before insertion
    If checked, a dialog box displays on each insertion and allows the user to input one or several words (with or without space) that will prefix the file name to create (see below).

    Notes:
    • If the "Add a prefix" option is enabled, a prefix MUST be input - otherwise, the "OK" button will not be enabled
    • Illegal characters (such as "/", "\", "#") will be automatically replaced by "_".

    Add a suffix to the file name before insertion
    If checked, a dialog box displays on each insertion and the user can input one or several words there (with or without space) that will suffix the file name (see below).

    Notes:
    • If the "Add a suffix" option is enabled, a suffix MUST be input – otherwise, the "OK" button will not be enabled,
    • Illegal characters (such as "/", "\", "#") will be automatically replaced by "_".
    Modification of Case
    To facilitate the integration of the files generated by TraceParts in the Document Management systems (PDM), it is possible to preset the case of the filenames.

    To do so, you merely have to use the drop-down menu below:

    Note:It is of course possible to combine several of the above properties:

    Case of a file already existing in the specified destination directory: (top)

    TraceParts can have two different behaviors:

    1) Automatically create a new instance of the part
    This is the default behavior.
    In this case TraceParts uses the file existing in the working directory to make the insertion in the CAD.

    2) Warn about the presence of the part
    TraceParts will then advise the user that a file already exists bearing the same name as the file to be generated, and will ask whether it should be used.
    For instance:

  • If "yes", then the behavior will be identical to that described in 1)
  • If "no", the insertion process will be suspended.

    BOM information (top)

    By default, the BOM information is incorporated in the file containing the part.
    It is possible to obtain this information in a text file separate from the file containing the part.
    Check this property for that.

    Note: To date, the only export format available is the *.csv format

    Insertion and Export – Preset of BOM Information (top)

    This option is used to indicate to TraceParts which Bill of Materials (BOM) fields are to be created at the time of an insertion.

    The listed fields are all the fields that can exist in the different parts of TraceParts.
    • If a field is checked, and if it exists, it will be created automatically with the part at the time of its insertion.
    • If a field is unchecked, it will not be created with the part, even if it exists for the selected part.

    "Apply preset automatically" box:
    • If checked, the BOM fields of each part will be created according to the specified preset.
    • If unchecked, the BOM fields will always be those specified for the current part.
